Exclusive Emily VanCamp #CaptainAmericaEvent Interview

Glowing, smiling, and dressed in #TeamCap blue, Emily VanCamp brought the room alive when she entered. While the Emily VanCamp Captain America: Civil War Interview is next to last on the blog, she actually kicked off our day of interviews in LA. We couldn’t have asked for a better ray of sunshine to start the morning.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on Friday and with each interview I write, I get to relive the movie over and over again! 😀 All of it, including the kiss and high heel kicking, Captain America kissing, Agent 13 played by Emily VanCamp. Pull up a chair and get ready for a female filled interview!

One of the most inspiring things for me, when on these Press Trips, is meeting the women behind the roles. Young and young at heart, there really are some amazingly inspiring women in Hollywood that our daughters, and ourselves, can look up to. How does Emily VanCamp feel about being a role model for females and young girls?

I always hate it when I hear actors or musicians or people in the public eye say that they have no obligation to be any sort of role model. It’s not like you have an obligation but. you have a choice and why wouldn’t you choose to empower young women? Use yourself as a vehicle when you have a voice to inspire. I don’t see why you wouldn’t. That’s not to say I’m always gonna play this kind of character. It’s amazing to play a kick-ass girl like Sharon or a really tortured version of a woman when I played Emily Thorn, or I just did a film called the Girl in the Book which is much more rooted in reality and much more real. But I also think she in her own way is strong and on her own adventures so I tend to pick characters that have those elements to it. In terms of being a role model, I know it’s not a responsibility but, it’s something that I feel connected to. I have three sisters. I have wonderful women in my life and I just want to see girls have the best opportunities they possibly can, and if I can inspire that in the tiniest way I don’t see why I wouldn’t. – Emily Vancamp

I can not begin to tell you how friendly, open, and articulate Emily VanCamp was during our Captain America: Civil War interview. Admittedly I have not watched Revenge so I wasn’t to familiar with her in that role, but seeing her play Agent 13 made me a fan. After hearing her speak about being a role model, and knowing what she loved about the character she played and how she identified with Agent 13, made me an even bigger fan!

What I love about Sharon is her moral compass. I think she has a really strong moral compass and I think that’s what her and Steven initially sort of identify with each other, and ultimately in the comic books it led to a very complicated relationship but, there has gotta be something that brings them together, as well as their love of Peggy. I think there’s an initial trust there, that maybe he doesn’t have with anyone else, and maybe she doesn’t have with anyone else. I really enjoyed that but, in terms of what I identify with, I love a girl with a strong moral compass and a lot of integrity, and I think she really has that and I think you see her struggle with that within this film because she’s battling her work and her loyalty to her work. The cats rebel against that and it’s like, is she gonna follow her head and her heart? We ultimately see what she does but, I think people can relate to that struggle. – Emily Vancamp

It’s not all friends and sweetness with Agent 13 though. She has a pretty sweet fight scene in Captain America: Civil War too! Female fight scenes impress me because I’m such a weenie. I’ve been in one fight my entire life and yeah, it hurts getting hit in the face for real. Although I did score a free taco at Taco Bell, because they felt bad for me and my little scratch. Not my finest moment and definitely not as epic as Emily VanCamp’s experiences that go all the way back to Revenge. Granted she had some training, and I was merely going off of adrenaline. 😀

It’s just a lot of working out really. I had already done some training for Revenge, so it was an easier segue into the films but, you wanna go into these movies feeling really strong and feeling fit and I wanna be able to keep up really. We were wrapping Revenge while I started training for the movie, which is very interesting and I kind of realized how much I should have done that for Revenge. I mean, I was fit doing Revenge but I was like oh, this is another level. I’m just not really good going into it and, you know, it’s fun. I love that stuff. I was a dancer so all that physical activity is great and sort of helps with the sequences and stuff because ultimately it’s choreography. I hope to get to do more of it. – Emily VanCamp

Many of the bloggers at the interview are big Revenge Fans. The fact that Emily mentioned the show was exciting and gave us the chance to find out how Emily Thorn (Revenge) and Sharon Carter (Agent 13) compare and contrast. two, straight from the woman who plays them both.

Meaning Emily Thorn and Sharon Carter? Someone asked me who would win in a battle the other day and I was really thinking about it, because I think Sharon’s incredibly technical and has this obviously very serious real training, you know. It’s not like some Sensei that she had in Japan but, I think Emily would win because she’s so tortured. She’s just fueled by so much anger so I kind of feel like, when she unleashes the rage it’s like, see ya. But, I think it would be a really close fight. Sharon might just be missing a little bit of an edge. – Emily Vancamp

Okay, enough fighting for a moment, because Captain America: Civil War has some swoon worth scenes to mention. Well, I already mentioned Captain America Flexing in Captain America: Civil War, feel free to stop back over and drool. Cap doesn’t just show off his biceps though, he also partakes in a bit of smooching….oooooh…… 😀

I didn’t even think I was allowed to talk about that but, I’m realizing everyone’s seen it so I guess I can talk about it. Yeah, I mean it’s kind of refreshing to see Captain America in a more intimate situation and, like I said, they have chemistry. It was there even in The Winter’s Soldier, I would say. So, it’s kind of nice to see it finally happen. – Emily Vancamp

So, Agent 13 fights, kisses, and has herself involved in the Civil War among the Avengers. Among all of that, we had to find out if there was a scene that was particularly difficult for her to shoot.

I wouldn’t say difficult. I think in these movies, you just don’t wanna screw it up, you know what I mean? Like everyone’s bringing their A game. It’s very rare that you go into a movie almost already knowing it’s going to be great and successful because just historically they’ve been so successful. So you wanna bring your A game and you wanna show up and I was in Winter Soldier, but not very much so it’s always a little intimidating. There’s that nervous factor before you go into it, but everyone’s so kind and generous and the Russo Brothers have always made me feel so comfortable. – Emily VanCamp

Agent 13 will forever be apart of Emily VanCamp. That’s what happens when you take on characters that either mean a lot to fans, or connect to people. Agent 13 is both. I mean, there’s already an Agent 13 POP Figure so she can live on forever! We had a POP Figure on the table for VanCamp to check out, to which she said, “I never actually saw it out of the box. It’s hilarious. I think she’s pretty cool. I gotta get one for my mom or something.” It was fun to see her reaction to herself as a figure, and it made us wonder what she thought about Agent 13 being a part of her for ever?

It’s really cool. It’s really cool. I mean being a part of this universe is really a special thing especially with the movies that they’re making and how good they are. It’s really, really cool and I’m really happy to do it with the people I’m doing it with because as I said, everyone’s great and super talented. These movies could have been very surface level but, what I love about Marvel is how they delve into the characters. They sort of give us the freedom as well, to create a version of the character that hopefully the fans will like and it’s a really fun process. So the fact that people love the movies is like an extra bonus. – Emily VanCamp

Emily VanCamp spoke so highly of joining the Marvel Universe, working with the Russo brothers, and playing the role of Agent 13. You would think she was as big fan of superheroes growing up, but when we asked if she had a favorite superhero growing up, her answer was awesomely surprising!

It’s really interesting. Someone else asked me that recently and I was trying to think of like a superhero that I looked up to and I mean I was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles, I’m not gonna lie. I was one four years in a row for Halloween and I was trying to figure out….do they count as superheroes? I don’t know but that was my thing. I mean oh, my god and probably inspired some of these characters I really like to play, I don’t know. I wanted to be the Ninja Turtlea. I think I was Donatello one year and then Michelangelo three years because I love pizza.- Emily Vancamp

We couldn’t have a Captain America: Civil War Interview with the woman in Cap’s life without asking her if she was Team Cap IN REAL LIFE! 😀

Well I have to be in Team Cap. I have to be. I’m traveling with Team Iron Man, and the truth is, she’s very torn. She’s got this struggle in this movie, where she’s sort of on the sly, giving information but trying to keep her job. So I guess for the viewers, it could potentially go either way, but I think for me as I’m leaving, for me to say I was anything but Team Cap would have massive problems but, I also agree with him. I do agree with him, and watching the movie I was kind of really trying to take myself out of it, and my personal connection to the character, and think ‘okay, well what do I think’ and I really get what he’s doing. I truly do. – Emily Vancamp
