We had SO much fun chatting with the cast of The Real O’Neals while in LA a few weeks ago. So much fun that I had to bring you The Real O’Neals Interview Part 2! Tonight at 8:30 PM ET is The Real Retreat episode The Real O’Neal’s. Pranks are in store, karaoke is sung, laughter will be had, and the rest of this interview will make you feel like you are part of the O’Neal family!

While in LA a few weeks ago, we screened The Real O’Neals “The Real Retreat” episode that will be airing on ABC tonight, and it is SUPER funny. I’m chuckling to myself thinking about it all over again and! 😀 All I can say is….you don’t want to make Jimmy blow his whistle….!
When Jimmy is unexpectedly named Faith Leader for the weekend at the Catholic Youth Retreat, a jealous Kenny decides to take on his older brother’s role as ring leader of the bad kids. Home alone without the kids, Pat invites a new lady friend over, and Eileen can’t help but enlist Jodi to spy on them, with surprising results.

There is not an episode of The Real O’Neals that goes buy, that my face doesn’t hurt from laughter. No lie. Kenny is hilarious, his facial expressions and his lines, Jimmy and Pat are incognizantly funny, Shannon cracks you up with her matter-of-factness, and Eileen….well she’s Eileen. 😀
I don’t know if I have a favorite scene. I mean, I probably do if I thought about it, but I definitely have favorite lines. Mine’s more about the moments that made me laugh while we were working, and those are always the ones that I look back on with the most fondness, and the ones that inevitably crack me up the most once I see it on TV. I don’t know if you guys saw the camping episode where we all go camping, but when he pulls out the Luna Bar and, and he says, ‘I saw the moon on it like on the cabbage, and I thought- camping’ and the way he said it, I was dreading it before we even shot it. I was dreading, just off our table read, I said to myself, oh boy, that’s gonna be one of those that’s gonna be really challenging for me to keep together. Sure as shit, the first take, you know, and it’s on me, and I just immediately crack up It took a while to get, as it does usually with me most of the time. – Jay R. Ferguson

Jay R. Ferguson has somewhat of an infectious happiness about him. You just can’t help but smile when he appears on the TV screen. Maybe it’s amazingly wavy hair, or his smooth voice, either way, it’s fun to watch on screen. From the sound of it, the cast has a ton of fun working with Jay. R Ferguson too!
It’s just his face. He doesn’t even say anything, and he gets offended every time I say it. He’s like, ‘why are you breaking character’, and I’m like ‘your face is funny’ and he does this confused, like, he’s just lost look, I don’t what it is, but every time – I can’t look at him. The majority of the time, anytime we have a family sitting at the dinner table thing, they usually can’t put the camera on me because I’m laughing. Anything he says, like, I start cracking up. I just have to look down at the plate. – Matt Shively
In tonight’s The Real O’Neals: The Real Retreat Episode, once again we see the many sides of Jimmy. Trust me when say it’s a good episode! I think Matt Shively summed Jimmy up nicely when we asked him if he finds characteristics of himself in his character.
A little bit. I’m not the smartest person ever, so no, I’m very supportive and I grew up around gay people. I was in drama, so there’s at least five gay people, and so I was always sticking up for that. So I’ve always been supportive, and I love that Jimmy is, like, the stereotypical jock who’s a dick. He’s, like, very supportive and all he has is heart. So that’s very similar. – Matt Shively

Another character we see a different side of tonight is Jodi. She’s always been sweet Aunt Jodi who is there for anyone, but has she had enough? And to think that that there wasn’t even an Aunt Jodi when creation of The Real O’Neals began!
I love her. You know, I think it’s a show, clearly about this five person nucleus, but in the beginning, my character was a woman named Maureen who lived next door. I was not a family member. I was a next-door neighbor with a fifteen year old son who’d gotten a girl pregnant. That was the original role. And then I came in, and and I guess I just knocked it right out of the park and they said, ‘let’s change this up and make her part of the family‘. I feel like the O’Neals are going through a traumatic event, and the family’s kind of imploding a little bit. Aunt Jodi is the one who is there, but actually can’t keep her mouth shut, [laughs] she’s constantly trying to help, and I just think that’s so much fun. I love that – Mary Hollis Inboden

I had someone ask me on Twitter if The Real O’Neals were a “real” family like on Black-ish and Fresh off the Boat. They are not, but they do a really good job of portraying a family don’t they?! That bond isn’t just for the camera either.
They’re all so amazing. They instantly bonded; they hang out with each other outside of work. They wanna be – they’re a family and that just makes our job so much easier because you can only write so much of that, and then rest of it has to sort of happen organically. Luckily with them, I mean, they love each other so much. – EP David Windsor
Yeah, from the pilot, they had that chemistry. Jay was on Mad Men, and he said they used to always play games during the downtime, so during the pilot, he brought Catch Phrase and all these games, and he was the one who kind of was like, we’re doing this. Some actors can just go off to their trailer; they wanna do their own thing, and he really made them this family, and now, they hang out – they still hang out. It’s very amazing. – EP Stacy Traub
