When I first saw Philips hue on display at Best Buy, I was smitten. My mental list of all the ways I could create personalized lighting at home began forming.
Orange lights for Halloween. Red lights for Christmas. Even blue blinking lights when the Royals win! I was pleasantly surprised when Best Buy provided me with Philips hue lighting to transform our home lighting last week.
(Any opinions are 100% my own as always.)
Personalized Lighting At Home Ultimate Guide to Philips hue
Philips hue makes it SO easy and fun to create personalized lighting in any room of your home. You can adjust colors, set timers, and schedule alerts right from your phone or mobile device.
The Philips hue bulbs, accessory lights, and bridge work easily with your Wi-Fi. You can create mood-setting color schemes, enjoy the right light setting for reading, relaxing, concentrating, and more.
Okay, let’s get right to it with this Ultimate Guide to Philips hue!
#1 Pick Your Lighting
There are several styles of Philips hue lighting available. We are using two styles for personalized lighting in the living room and dining room.
The Philips hue Go light is pretty awesome with completely wire free portability. Moms and dads, hue Go is a great night light, just saying!
Philips hue Go Portable Light
The Go Portable Light can be plugged in or carried with you thanks to 3-hours of rechargeable battery life! There are 5 patented “natural dynamic effects”. They include Cozy Candle, Sunday Coffee, Meditation, Enchanted Forest, and Night Adventure. Each dynamic effect has its own mix of colors to set the right mood.
Philips hue White and Color Ambiance Starter Kit
The new Philips hue White and Color Ambiance Starter Kit is the former generation 1 starter kit, but improved! This kit includes three A19 bulbs that have been upgraded from 600 to 800 lumens to provide better lighting.
While I’m not familiar with the previous kit, I can tell you that I’m loving the lighting these bulbs offer! This kit works with Apple HomeKit (iOS users) so you can control your lights with Siri voice control on your iPhone.
#2 Install Your Lighting
Installing Philips hue is actually pretty simple. With the hue Go, you simply plug it in to use, or when charged it is portable.
When you connect with the Philips hue App and hue Bridge (we’ll get to that in a moment) you’ll have 16 million color options! Philips hue Go is quite possibly the best portable light I have encountered!
Installing the Philips hue Starter Kit was easy peasy too! Simply unscrew your current bulbs and screw in the hue Bulbs. Connect the hue Bridge to your router, download the app, and your set.
Let’s talk about routers because routers are important when you have a connected family. Netgear is a go-to of mine when it comes to tech. I’ve talked about a lot of Netgear products here on the blog.
There are 6 connected people in our home and that requires major performance from our router. The Netgear® Nighthawk™ DST Router and DST Adapter with Geek Squad included (new and exclusively at Best Buy) comes with the complete package. If you have Wi-Fi Dead Zones that affect streaming, gaming, and connection to your devices, you want to check out this new Netgear® Nighthawk™.
Netgear® Nighthawk™ DST Router and DST Adapter
- The AC1900 includes one DST (Dead Spot Terminator) Adapter to eliminate Wi-Fi dead zones. (Our router is in the basement so we plugged the adapter in upstairs in the living room)
- High-performance router built to support 10+ connected devices.
- Ability to prioritize devices for streaming videos or music.
- Advanced features for lag-free gaming.
- Geek Squad Set Up and Support via phone and web, for one full year! This service allows you to call or get help 24/7 whenever you want, instead of scheduling an appointment.
#3 Personalize Your Lighting
When Philips hue lighting is installed, the fun begins! You can manage hue lights from your smartphone or tablet and adjust colors, brightness and functions from anywhere in your home. The twins seriously think the lights changing colors is the best thing EVER!
Philips hue App
- Get full functionality of the Philips hue app when connected to the Hue Bridge so you can adjust colors, set timers, notifications, alarms, geofencing and more.
- Select from preset light recipes like Sunset, Beach, Blue Rain, Pencils, Relax, Energize, and more. You can also create your own with 16 million colors. Love taking photos? Create and save scenes using your favorite photos as palettes so you can enjoy those colors whenever you want.
- You can set the hue lights to Reading, Relax, or Energize to get the color of normal bulbs as well!
One of the features of of the Philips hue App that I’ll be using a lot is creating custom schedules! Being able to set the lights to match our routine is pretty sweet.
I can set the hue lights to brighten like a gradual sunrise every morning. Set a color loop for bed time so the kids know it’s time to get pajamas on. Even movie night settings for those recurring Family Movie Nights we have!
Plus, hubby needs a reminder to watch The Walking Dead on Sling TV now that we cancelled cable, so I set the lights to blink red on Sunday Nights so he’s knows it’s zombie time!
Speaking of Sling TV, have you checked it out?! I honestly wish we had cancelled cable and switched to Sling TV a lot sooner than two months ago.
With Sling TV you watch when you want, on the device you want, plus pay for the channels you want at a great price. AMC, ESPN, A&E, TNT, and HGTV are just a few of the popular channels you get for $20 a month!
Yes, they have the latest episodes and you can watch live TV as well. Sling TV also has add-on packages for channels not offered with the monthly package, starting at $5 a month, and HBO® for an additional $15 per month.
How would you use personalized lighting with Philips hue in your home?
