One of our favorite and pretty much free, summer activities is a family picnic! Packing up the picnic basket with sandwiches, veggies, juice boxes, and heading to one of the many local parks in town.
The kids can play while I enjoy the sunshine. Well, that was before the twins. Now they keep me on my toes and add a little extra preparation to those outings, but it doesn’t mean we still can’t have a stress-free family picnic!

Tips for the Perfect Family Picnic
1) Place to Eat
Check ahead to see if the place you are headed has picnic tables. If not, pack a blanket and grab some lawn chairs to get comfortable on the ground.
2) Picnic Food List
Having four kids means there are some picky ones in the bunch. Based on school lunches and previous picnics, I keep a Picnic Food List of everyone’s favorite eats.
One likes turkey, the other ham, one likes carrots, the other broccoli. This way, I can easily pack sandwiches and snacks that no one will complain about.
3) Park Toys
We always have a ball, shovels and pails, and a frisbee in the van for any picnics or park trips. Play equipment varies by each park and sometimes the kids feel like taking advantage of grass areas instead of swings. Avoid the “man, I wish he had a soccer ball” comments and keep some “park toys” in the car.
4) Picnic Protection
Picnics mean lots of time outside enjoying the weather. Don’t let the sun, bugs, and other outdoorsy ailments enjoy you too much.
Pack Picnic Protection like bug spray, bandages, and first aid cream, so you are prepared. Another important thing to bring along for that outdoor fun is sun protection!
Confession: I’m just learning that sun protection requires 1 oz. every 2 hours to ensure family fun in all 7 conditions. Did you know that?!
Keep your family protected with these Tips and Advice for Sun Care protection:
- As all moms know, planning ahead is key! This definitely applies with sunscreen. Before heading to your family outing, consider how long you will be outside and how many times everyone will need to reapply. Remember to bring sunscreen for ALL outdoor activities, hikes, bike rides, swimming or even just a meal out in the backyard.
- Be sure to apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to you and your kids’ entire bodies 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
- A tip for the kids: Make sunscreen application fun! Make up lyrics to your own melody to sing while applying sunscreen. It keeps them engaged and makes it feel like less of a chore.
