I have a confession to make. This isn’t like my previous confessions of loving storage totes and that cheese is one of my favorite food groups. This confession is much harder to get off my chest but I need to be honest with you. It’s time I really truly focus on my own self-care and part of that is finally winning a battle I’ve been fighting. I’m a smoker and I’m ready to quit forever.
My parents smoke, my uncle smoked, my grandma smoked, and my grandfather died of lung cancer. Cigarettes weren’t unfamiliar in my life but oh how I wish I never lit that first one. Twenty-three years later and I’m ready to end this addiction to tobacco. I’ve quit smoking every time I was pregnant but within a few months of delivering I would start back up again. My chances of finally cutting ties with cigarettes increase each time and I want to be smoke-free for my kids and my future. Just like my four year old tackled her fears and climbed a giant dirt hill at the pumpkin patch recently, I too will conquer this hill and be a winner!
I know it’s not going to be an overnight win but this time is different. Smoking has been a stress-reliever for me but for the last two years, it’s almost a daily battle in my mind every time I have a cigarette. I want to be healthier. I want food to taste better. I want to be around to see my kids have kids. I want to enjoy empty nest life without an oxygen tank tied to me. So, I picked up a box NicoDerm® CQ® Patches at CVS Pharmacy to help me quit smoking.
Ending this tobacco addiction isn’t something I can do on my own and admitting that is the first step for me. I’ve put together an emergency basket with gum, hard candy, and a stress ball if I find that I’m struggling. Having a great support system in my corner is extremely helpful as well. Add to that the nicotine patch to help prevent the urge to smoke all day long when worn for 24 hours and I really feel like I’ve set myself to be a winner this time.
Using the NicoDerm® CQ® Patch has been really easy so far. I’m on Step 1 (Weeks 1 to 6) and use one 21-mg patch/day. The Extended Release SmartControl® Technology starts to deliver nicotine fast and continues steadily throughout the day. I switch out patches every morning, in a new spot each time. When Step 1 is completed, I will move onto Step 2 (Weeks 7 to 8) – use one 14-mg patch/day and Step 3 (Weeks 9 to 10) – use one 7-mg patch/day. Completing the full treatment program improves the chances of quitting smoking and I’m determined to do just that. Hopefully, in 10 weeks I will be completely smoke-free and celebrating my win on a beach. Okay not really, but I will be rewarding myself in some way, you can bet on that!
