Everything I Wish I Knew About A Good Skincare Routine
(and making sure my daughter knows)
Magazines. As a teenager, they are where I got most of my information. What to wear, how not to diet, and taking care of my body. Almost every Sunday I would lay in bed on my belly, feet dancing in the air, and flip through page after page of all the girly details.
I’d spend hours going through my closet trying to put together outfits like in the magazines and saved up my babysitting money for the latest beauty products. I tried all kinds of tips out of those magazines because my mom didn’t talk to me about stuff like fashion and skincare. When I first shaved my legs I also shaved my arms – that’s how little we talked about those kinds of things.
Girly by nature is something I am not but when I had my first daughter I knew I wanted to have all those conversations I didn’t have with my mom. How to shave, the difference in feminine products, and having a good skincare routine.
“I’m a big believer in that if you focus on good skincare, you really won’t need a lot of makeup.”
– Demi Moore
There are things I wish I knew about skincare as a teen that I’m making sure my daughter knows. Starting with a consistent good skincare routine, something I didn’t practice until I was in my 20’s because I was more focused on actual makeup than cleaning my skin. I’m not just telling my daughter about a good skincare routine but also being a role model for it.
I can’t remember ever seeing my mom wash her face, aside from wiping her eyeshadow off with petroleum jelly. That still baffles me lol! My daughter and I paint our nails together, use face masks together (especially when we have mother/daughter getaways!), and she knows the different products I use for my skin. She even surprised me with some on my last birthday – a sweet bonus of involving your daughter in your skincare routine!
Skincare routines go beyond nighttime face cleansing and that’s something I wish I knew growing up. I’m making sure my daughter knows taking care of our skin is important even when we are really tired after long days of school and activities.
Between gym class and dance lessons, she gets sweaty often while away from home. Tossing NEUTROGENA® Cleansing Wipes Pink Grapefruit in her bag is perfect for on-the-go skincare.
With NEUTROGENA® Cleansing Wipes Pink Grapefruit she can sweep away pore-clogging dirt and oil in one simple step, leaving skin clean with no greasy residue, so there’s no need to rinse! Perfect for carrying in backpacks at school and keeping in sports bags for a quick clean-up after practice.
Something else I’m making sure my daughter knows about good skincare is that breakouts and Acne are common and treatable. She’s dealt with Acne for the past two years and it bothered her quite a bit at first. Her pediatrician has offered prescription acne products but thankfully she’s getting great results from over-the-counter products like NEUTROGENA®, the #1 Dermatologist recommended Acne Brand.
Giving my daughter someplace to keep her skincare products helps her remember to keep a consistent skincare routine. Our medicine cabinet isn’t deep, it may as well just be a mirror, and the hallway linen closet isn’t convenient. So we keep her products in a cupboard of a shelf that hangs on the wall. Quickly within reach, so she can wash and moisturize her face before crawling into bed.
Finally, I’m making sure my daughter knows there are ways to save on skincare products. I don’t know about your teen daughter, but mine loves to have money in her wallet. Saving money means more money to spend on doing all the fun things teens want to do.
I’ve taught her to shop at CVS for her favorite NEUTROGENA® products. I love shopping at CVS because the aisles are big, the employees are friendly, it’s close to home. I’ve never walked into our CVS without being greeted with a smile and I appreciate that. I also appreciate the CVS Beauty Rewards Program and the sweet sales they offer!
Speaking of sale, starting September 9th, and that week only, you can buy 1 NEUTROGENA® Pink Grapefruit product at CVS and get 1 50% off. Plus, there’s an Ibotta offer that you can take advantage of at CVS to earn up to $2.00 cash back on NEUTROGENA® Acne products. I redeemed this recently and was able to do it for three products, so $6 back!
I’m glad I’m being more active in my daughter’s skincare routine than my mom was. Not only am I teaching her valuable lessons that will help keep her skin beautiful but I’m also learning new things as well. Plus, it gives us lots of bonding time that I’m soaking up before she heads off to college in two years. Eek!
