Easy Ways to Encourage Kids
to be Environmental Stewards
One person can not change the world but each of us doing little things can make a big impact. Being and raising environmental stewards is one of those things.
Environmental stewardship: The responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices to enhance ecosystem resilience and human well-being (Chapin et al, 2011 ).
There are some simple things we do in our family to help make the environment a better place. If you are looking for easy ways to encourage kids to be environmental stewards, here’s what we’ve done.
RECYCLE: Not only do we recycle through our local waste management company be we also encourage our kid to be creative and reuse things. Many crafts have been made from cardboard boxes and holey socks.
RESPECT: We show and teach our kids to respect nature. Don’t break limbs off trees, don’t litter, and don’t destroy. We’re starting to do a lot of camping and I love seeing their respect for nature when we are on our hikes.
SHOP LOCAL: The Farmers Market is one of our favorite places to shop during the spring and summer. We also enjoy garage sales and thrift stores to give new life to items someone else no longer needed.
PLANT: Flowers and veggies are something we plant every spring. The veggies don’t always work out but we love planting and brightening up our yard each season, especially my twins who each have their own space for planting and decorating.
DITCH PLASTIC BOTTLES: Each person is our family has their own water bottle and it saves us money and helps the environment. We were recently Zak’s new Planeterra water bottles and you guys, they are designed to breakdown toxin-free in a landfill within 3-5 years under traditional conditions!
Hopefully some of those ideas will help you encourage your kids to be environmental stewards, and you can also check out the 1-2-3s of Environmental Stewardship for more ways!
