A typical morning for me was waking up at 7:30 (after staying up until 2AM working) and cramming as much work as I could in 30 minutes, before seeing my son off to school and the twins getting up.
I would stress about getting the to-do list finished before the craziness of a work at home day with toddler twins began. Honestly, there was not a single thing working about my schedule. At. All. I had to make changes and one of those changes was hands-free mornings.
I’ve been making it a point to have hands free mornings for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is that my previous morning schedule was actually making things worse.
I’ve also been reading Hands Free Life and Hands Free Mama to give me monthly challenges to find a better balance. Second, and probably the saddest of them all, is all that stuff I was cramming in and stressing about every morning?
That stuff could wait. Making sure my kids have a good start to their day is a priority. I’m already seeing the benefits of hands free mornings in just the two weeks I’ve been focused on doing it.
Benefits of Hands Free Mornings
More Time with My Kids
Instead of hurrying through emails, or daily tasks, I actually slowed down and enjoyed extra conversations with my son before he went off to school. Granted he loves to run the three blocks to school early so he can hang out with his friends. But that extra 10 minutes we had helped me learn more about my son and realize what I’d been missing out on.
Less Stress Throughout the Day
It may seem odd that I stress less by putting off the work that was stressing me out, but that’s exactly what happened. Within 3 days of trying hands free mornings, I realized that the work I was rushing to get done actually got done easier later in the day. By starting the day calm and happy instead of stressed and rushed, everyone around me was calmer and happier, even the twins.
Time for Breakfast
It wasn’t uncommon for me to get the twins situated at the table for breakfast, and pull out my phone to finish sorting through emails. That means instead of eating at the table with them, I was working at the table while they ate. Now I make myself breakfast too and man does that make a difference. I know, obviously, but it took me slowing down to realize it.
One of my favorite things to make for breakfast right now is smoothies. They are easy to make and the whole family enjoys them so it’s a win-win!
With just a few ingredients I can whip up a quick breakfast to start the day, like the Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie we had yesterday!
When you have Silk Chocolate Soy Milk on hand, and toss some fruit in the freezer the night before, it makes it even easier to make this smoothie.
Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie
- 1 Cup Silk Chocolate Soy Milk
- 1 Cup Frozen Strawberries
- 1 Frozen Banana
- Place all ingredients in a blender
- Blend until mixed
- Pour into a glass
- Drink & Enjoy
Not a smoothie fan? A glass of Silk Chocolate Soy Milk also goes great with a Fried Egg Sandwich. Just typing that makes me want this breakfast all over again.
Whether you are a work at home mom, stay at home mom, or a mom who heads out to work every morning, there are benefits of hands free mornings that everyone will see.
Shut the laptop, turn off the phone, and grab a chair for breakfast and memories with your family. If I can do it, you can too!
