I’ve been buying school supplies for 11 years now. Over those years I’ve learned several things. Name brands work better, coupons for school supplies really help, and I rarely stick to only the back to school supply list in the store.
Usually, the list put out by the district is incorrect, so I wait to talk to the teacher on back to school night before I finish shopping. Having a high schooler, I’ve also learned that there are back to school supplies for teens that they will actually use, and use A LOT!

Back to School Supplies for Teens
#1 Post-It Flags and Post-It Notes
Post-It Flags are by far the school supply I buy the most. As a 10th grader in Advanced Classes, my daughter goes through so many Post-It Flags I should probably buy stock in them. She marks homework, school books, personal books she’s reading, her calendar, and pretty much anything she can put a flag or tab on.
Staying organized and taking notes are two big parts of success in middle school and high school. Post-It Notes get used on the daily by my tween and teen. The Post-It Personal Calendar will be helpful for my son starting middle school. He can keep track of what days are PE days, when he has clubs, and even tests coming up.
Speaking of calendars, that’s high on the list of back to school supplies for teens that will get used a lot. With a growing list of extracurricular and school events, they will need a calendar to keep track of it all.
Wall calendars, pocket calendars, or planners make great options for teens. Even a calendar app on their phone is helpful.
#3 Jansport Backpack
Freshman year my daughter got her first Jansport Backpack and she loves it. She’ll be using it again this year and it’s held up really well.
She has a busy schedule including band, tennis, and dance so the backpack has taken a beating. I thought for sure I’d need a new one this year, but nope. The Jansport Backpack is a trooper and gets two thumbs up from us.
#4 Ticonderoga Pencils
Probably one of the best pencils to date, Ticonderoga Pencils are a must have back to school supply for teens. Pre-sharpened #2 pencils made from quality cedar wood for nice smooth writing. If you haven’t tried these before, check them out and see what your teens think!
#5 Bulletin Board
There are so many reasons a bulletin board is on the list of back to school supplies for teens. It will get used a lot and fill up quickly. Everything from a calendar to mementos from the school year, to photos of best friends, and important details to remember.
#6 Lap Desk
We bought my daughter a Lap Desk last Christmas and she uses it quite a bit. With a lot of homework being a Chromebooks, this comes in handy for her in the living room and bedroom. It has a drawer for storage and it adjusts for comfort.
