My dad played football in high school. My youngest brother played football and high school. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that my son has an interest in football. It started with flag football, but he outgrew that and wanted more contact. Of course, the usual concerns raced through my mind, and all the ways he could get hurt. Kids can play smarter football nowadays and the more I learned and talked to other football moms, the more my concerns were put at ease.
5 Ways Kids Can Play Smarter Football
What exactly is Smarter Football? Over the years, football has become less about the fastest or strongest, and more about the smartest both on and off the field. The game of football relies more on science and technology to help evolve players into elite athletes. In what ways can kids play smarter football? Here are 5 ways!
#1 Proper Nutrition
Well rounded meals and not skipping breakfast are important, especially when you play sports. As parents, keeping the fridge and cupboards stocked during football season helps keep our player full.
#2 Excellent Sportsmanship
Being nice and treating others with respect goes a long way on and off the field. When your head isn’t swirling with drama and negativity, you can focus better.
#3 Maintaining Good Grades
Maintaining good grades is especially important for high school football, where there are requirements to be on the field. Help your football player stay on top of their grades by providing a great study space at home.
#4 Safe tackling
Learning and using proper techniques for safe tackling are important to playing smarter football. No matter what sport it is, listening to coaches and applying what is being taught keep players safe. I’m always reminding my kids to pay attention and focus on the task at hand during game time.
#5 Riddell Smarter Football Commitment
Riddell is calling on players, coaches, parents, and fans to take an active role in advancing the game through the Smarter Football Commitment. Let’s all join together to create a safer, better sport through the use of “smarter” tactics on AND off the field!
At Riddell, Smarter Football manifests itself in the way the brand integrates engineering expertise with new data and cutting-edge materials to develop protective equipment.
Riddell has collected over 10 years of head impact data and research with biomarkers through a partnership with TGen and the University of Arizona. During that research, they developed and introduced the first flexible football helmet with the Riddell SpeedFlex in 2014. As a mom who is putting her kid in a helmet, I appreciate the amount of work that goes into creating safer for smarter football. I appreciate that Riddell’s Precision-Fit process utilizes 3D scanning techniques to build a completely custom-fitting helmet for the individual player. Every player is different and I think this could be a game changer!
Other ways they are bringing smarter football to the game is with Riddell’s InSite Impact Response System. This system helps thousands of football programs improve their playing techniques and acts as an extra set of eyes for coaches and training staff. I would love to see this system in all school’s nationwide some day.
