The Farmers Market is one of my favorite places to shop in the spring in summer. Fresh produce, delicious breads, wonderful smells, and friendly people. If you have a Farmers Market in your area, here are 10 Farmers Market Shopping Tips to help make your shopping trip even better.
10 Farmers Market Shopping Tips
TIP 1: Don’t make a list. What is in season and available each week changes so it’s best to buy what looks good that day.
TIP 2: Figure out how many meals you will be cooking that week and don’t over buy. Having a meal plan before you head to the market can help this, but be flexible due to Tip 1.
TIP 3: Bring along your own bag or basket to carry your purchases in. If you have an insulated one, bring that along for any meat or dairy products.
TIP 4: Early Birds get the best pick and Late Birds may get closing time deals. You will usually find the best selection if you go early, especially if you have a lot of restaurants serving local food, as they tend to stock up early at Farmers Market. If you want the best prices, go closer to closing time when you are more likely to get a deal on what’s left.
TIP 5: Ask the farmers and vendors if they have imperfect (bruised) products and you may save some money. These work great for breads, jam, and soups.
TIP 6: Take two trips around. One to look at everything and one to purchase your favorite finds.
TIP 7: Small bills and change are better to have on hand for payment.
TIP 8: Check out any chef demos going on. I have learned some yummy techniques for veggies and meats this way, as well as found new foods I loved that I may not have tried otherwise.
TIP 9: Chat up the farmers! Ask the best ways to store your purchases so you get the longest life out of them. Ask if the products are also available in local grocery stores and you may catch a sale.
TIP 10: Have fun and make a girls day out of it! Maybe you can even share your goodies during the week and have a girls dinner in.
