Unbreakable Me: Finding Yourself After Parenthood
It’s pretty amazing how quickly we fill those “mom shoes” isn’t it? Before we know it, Girls Night Out is traded for toddler play dates. The characters we talk about are more cuddly and colorful than hunky and handsome. Our clothes are covered in spit up instead of sparkles. When we tell people who we are, we refer to our self’s as “Haily’s Mom” or “James’ Mom”. We all say that we love it and wouldn’t have it any other way. But one day it will hit you…….you will realize YOU have become buried underneath MOM.
*I partnered with Netflix for this post as a Stream Team Member. Any opinions are 100% my own.
When we become a mom for the first time, we start putting someone else first and their interests became more important than our own. As they get older, their schedule is put in front of our schedule. Then we give them siblings and more interests and schedules go in front of ours. It can be exhausting, and yes very rewarding, but even while being a mom, there is a still a you in there. We can’t forget that and I did for a little while….

While being stuck in a chair nursing the twins non-stop for the first three months and surfing Pinterest, it dawned on me…..I had very few likes of my own. Hobbies, interests, the things we do in our spare time. Which at that point, my spare time was spent napping or squeezing in a shower. The things I was into pre-parenthood were either not cool, no longer around, or had advanced so much I was out of touch. So, how do you go about finding yourself after parenthood?

You do what Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt does, that’s what you do! Even if it has been fifteen years since you have had a “life”, you have to charge forward and go get one, like it’s your first day of everything! You try new things like eating candy for dinner or painting a canvas while drinking wine. You visit new places like New York City or the restaurant that just opened up in town. You take chances on new people like the roommate wanted ad in the paper or lunch with a co-worker.
In the past year and a half I have visited places I have never been, like LA and San Francisco. I’ve found a new love for painting, and yes, it involves Moscato. I planned my first Girlfriends Getaway with my best friend of 15 years to Florida. And the adventures and experiences aren’t stopping there! When I decided to not let parenthood break me, to be a mom and a whole lot more, I introduced the world to the Unbreakable Me.
Have you introduced the world to the Unbreakable You?
Catch Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix starting March 6th! Trust me when I say that it is hilarious, unique, addicting and will give you enough catch phrases to last a lifetime.
