Marvel’s Doctor Strange Review
Marvel’s Doctor Strange completely blew me away from start to finish. I’ve always enjoyed the action and stories of Marvel films, but this took it to another level. An edge of your seat magic eye poster ride that will have you wanting more when the credits roll. Speaking of, there are TWO end credits after Doctor Strange so keep your booty in the seat.
Whether you know the story of the Doctor Strange comic or not, you will enjoy this movie. That’s another thing I love about Marvel movies is you don’t have to be a comic book fan to understand or enjoy them. Yes, there are bigger storylines when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, but each individual film, like Doctor Strange, can stand alone as well. In my opinion.
It’s not just the impressively trippy special affects that make Doctor Strange a movie you need tickets for. Thought provoking is also on the list. There is one scene in particular, that I left out of all of our Doctor Strange Interviews that will blow you away. I won’t give too much away, but I will let Tilda Swinton tell you about the deeply profound things her character, The Ancient One says.
There were a couple of moments I must say, when I really found it such a privilege to say. There’s a moment earlier than that, when I’m teaching Doctor Strange and looking straight into the camera, basically teaching the globe’s population of fifteen-year-olds about mindfulness. That was like, WOW! This is such a great chance, you know, to say, ‘Yes I’m a rad superhero myself, but I’m telling you, be authentic, you can control your mind; you have a choice of your reaction to obstacles in your life, and serve something greater than yourself!’
And that amazing moment at the end, saying to Doctor Strange ‘and if, what is it? Fear and ego have kept you from learning the greatest, simplest and most significant lesson of them all – it’s not about you.’ That’s pretty amazing and that’s the kind of thing that one can imagine saying or learning from a different kind of movie, but to put that in a Marvel film and know that it’s going to be picked up by all of our kids was a nice. A nice thing. – Tilda Swinton
Rachel McAdams discussed the same scene during our interview with her as well.
I love that moment when Tilda says “it’s not about you” to Benedict. I just thought that was so powerful. When I read that in the script that really hit me and I thought, how seemingly fun a comic book movie takes a turn like that, and is talking about something that deep and profound. It sung for me again in the film. I thought it was really simple and true and a really beautiful message. – Rachel McAdams
Yet again, we heard about this scene during out Scott Derrickson Interview. I will warn you, he goes beyond the “it’s not about you” line, and talks about a spoiler so you may want to keep on reading and come back after you see the film.
My favorite scene in the movie is the death of the Ancient One. I really love that scene, you know. Audiences pay for to see spectacle, in these kind of movies. They pay to see these big visual effects, overwhelming scenes, and action, and fighting, and all of that. But whether or not they like a movie, is whether or not it moves them. And whether they like the character, and whether it moves them emotionally. That scene feels like the heart of the movie to me. – Scott Derrickson
